Hennie van Vuuren is the director of the Cape Town office of the Institute for Security Studies which promotes human security in Africa through applied research, capacity building and training. He previously worked as Senior Researcher and head of the ISS Corruption and Governance Programme. Before joining the ISS as senior researcher in 2002, Hennie was based in Berlin for three years, working as a programme officer at the Transparency International (TI) secretariat. He holds a post-graduate degree in Political Studies from the Free University (Berlin) and a BA Honours degree in African Political Studies from Wits University. His research interests are the intersection of access to information, corruption, and social justice.

Along with researcher Paul Holden, Hennie van Vuuren co-authored The Devil in the Detail, a book on the South African Arms Deal.
