Adrian Hadland

Dr Adrian Hadland was a journalist, columnist and editor for almost 15 years covering South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy for the local and international media. He joined South Africa's statutory research organisation, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in 2002. He is currently a director in the HSRC's Democracy and Governance research programme and is also an honorary research associate at the University of Cape Town's Centre for Film and Media Studies.

Adrian read for his undergraduate degree in politics and English at the University of Cape Town, and then completed a post-graduate degree in African and Comparative Literature at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg before acquiring masters at the University of Oxford and a PhD from the University of Cape Town in 2007. He has published 15 books and research monographs including an unauthorised biography of former South African president Thabo Mbeki, several children's books and several scholarly works. In 2009 he published Mandela – A Life.
