Description : African Tears: The Zimbabwean Land Invasion, was Catherine Buckle’s first book about the devastation of Zimbabwe’s farming sector.

In it, she describes how in 1990 she and her husband became the proud owners of Stow Farm, with the approval of the Zanu-PF government. They borrowed money at high interest rates to turn the farm into a viable financial enterprise and within seven years they had paid off the loan and were free of debt.

But on 28 February 2000, a mob of men claiming to be veterans of the 1980 War for Independence arrived at their farm gate. The so-called ‘war vets’ claimed that the farm and everything on it was now their property, and that they had come to take back what had been stolen from their ancestors.

African Tears is Cathy’s horrifying account of what then transpired. It is the story of her family’s experiences and describes the horror of their home, livelihood and investment taken away from them. African Tears is a moving testament to the horror that has been unleashed by President Robert Mugabe’s exploitative land policy and the corruption which is running riot in a country that faces both starvation and financial ruin.

After the Dance: Travels in a Democratic South Africa

Category : Politics

Author : David Robbins

ISBN : 1868421937
Description : In April 1994 South Africa danced its first bold dance with constitutional democracy.
Millions of people entered into a state of euphoria and rejoicing. Even after the jubilation of the dance had subsided, the broad optimism remained, but mingled with cynicism from some quarters and an expectation of rich rewards in others.

This book sets out to capture some of the flavour of what has happened since that first wild dance took place.

In the early 1980s The 29th Parallel described a journey across the country from east to west at a time when South Africans were beginning to be embroiled in great social and political change. In the early 1990s Driving South dealt with a second journey, this time from the Limpopo to Cape Agulhas, when people were bracing themselves for the inevitable political climax to come.
After the Dance probes beneath the surface of the country once again, and David Robbins has allowed South Africans in various parts of the country to speak for themselves within the framework of their individual circumstances.

It is a collection of vividly described places and personal stories, many of them thematically interlinked, brought together within the easy confines of a book of travel.

After The Party A Personal and Political Journey inside the ANC

Category : Politics

Author : Andrew Feinstein

ISBN : 978186842262
Description :

Andrew Feinstein became an active – and ardent – member of the ANC in the 1980s, and campaigned energetically for the party in the first democratic elections. He was elected to parliament and rose swiftly through the ranks, earning the label ‘Mr Clean’ for his unstinting work against graft and corruption.

But his feelings of euphoria at being part of the new South Africa slowly soured. Initially disappointed by the constant jockeying for power and the denialist AIDS policy of President Thabo Mbeki, Feinstein’s disillusionment grew as he sought unsuccessfully to investigate the corruption surrounding the Arms Deal. Isolated from his former comrades, Feinstein was forced to choose between his principles and the party he had so admired. This is his story.

Andrew Feinstein was an ANC MP for more than seven years before resigning in protest at the party's handling of the multi-billion rand arms deal that was tainted by allegations of high-level corruption. After working in financial services he now writes, lectures and consults on public policy issues, particularly governance, leadership, corruption, diversity and AIDS. He also chairs an HIV & AIDS charity.

Much of what is going wrong [in South Africa], notably the ANC’s brutal war of succession and the ever growing nexus between business and politics, has its roots in the arms deal.

Description :

Much of what is going wrong [in South Africa], notably the ANC’s brutal war of succession and the ever growing nexus between business and politics, has its roots in the arms deal. Mail & Guardian, January 2007

After the Party burst onto the South African political scene when it was published in 2006, becoming an instant-bestseller. Detailing ex-ANC MP Andrew Feinstein’s involvement with the ruling party – his euphoria at being part of the new South Africa followed by a growing disillusionment over the ANC’s handling of HIV/AIDS and in particular the notorious Arms Deal – it sold more than 30 000 copies.

Now, in a new edition, Feinstein brings his fascinating story up to date following the watershed ANC Conference at Polokwane and the shift of power within the party. He writes an insider account of developments in the Arms Deal investigations, including the allegations against President Thabo Mbeki, and the German and British inquiries. He details the rise of Jacob Zuma and sets out the overwhelming case that Zuma faces on charges of corruption.

Feinstein is currently working on a new book, Sins of Commission, which will explore and expose the shady dealings of the arms industry around the world. Sins of Commission will be published by Jonathan Ball Publishers in South Africa in 2010.

Armed and Dangerous: From Undercover Struggle to Freedom

Category : Politics

Author : Ronnie Kasrils

ISBN : 1868420639
Description : During the years of apartheid rule in South Africa, Ronnie Kasrils was actively involved with the banned ANC, its military wing Umkonto we Sizwe and the South African Communist Party.

Hunted by the security police, he was described by them as armed and dangerous.

This is his first-hand account of the tense and dramatic years of the liberation struggle followed by his role in the first ten years of a democratic South Africa in which he first served as Deputy Defence Minister (1994 to 1999) and then as Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry (1999 to 2004).

The preface begins with an account of a television broadcast in 1990. Kasrils watched as a newsreader announced that he was a suspect in a plot to overthrow the government by force and information on his whereabouts was to be passed on to the police immediately.

This shocking opening grips the reader’s attention while the rest of Kasrils’ narrative maintains its hold.

Originally published in 1993, the book was republished in 1998 with eight additional chapters. So great has been the demand that Kasrils has added two further chapters to update the book to 2004.
