She is currently head of special research at the South African Institute of Race Relations. Her books include The Natal Story: Sixteen years of conflict and The Truth about the Truth Commission which have both been acclaimed for their meticulous and objective approach, and for breaking new ground on important and contentious issues. In 2010 she wrote People’s War: New Light on the Struggle for South Africa, an eye-opener of a book which re-assigns blame for South Africa’s political violence in the 80s and 90s.
