Die Burger 100: Sy mense en hul stories

Bun Booysens and Aldi Schoeman

ISBN 9781868427963

Over the past 100 years around 30 000 newspapers have been delivered to homes six days a week making Die Burger a household name today. This book brings to life some of the most remarkable events, big and small, that its journalists have been witness to: from the Spanish Flu and the two world wars to Chris Barnard’s first heart transplant and Nelson Mandela’s death in 2013.

Natural disasters, political disasters, people in the news, scandals and key sport moments, this book is not only a trip down memory lane but also a lesson in history. The “remember when?” factor is strengthened by a vast number of photos and cartoons. Highlights include:

  • Lindie Koorts writes about DF Malan, founding editor
  • Dana Snyman investigates the origin of DJ Opperman’s famous poem Klara Majola – ’n report in Die Burger from 1950!
  • Johann Maarman shares his impressions of Jakes Gerwel
  • Leopold Scholtz describes the fall of the Berlin Wall, which he experienced first hand
  • Francois Verster writes about Die Burger’s cartoonists – DC Boonzaaier, TO Honiball and Fred Mouton
  • Bun Booyens reports from Kazakhstan about Mark Shuttleworth’s trip as the world’s second space tourist
